Welcome to the University of Pavia, one of the oldest universities in Europe, founded in 1361. The first Chair of Chemistry in Pavia was established in 1770, marking the beginning of a long scientific tradition.Today, the Department of Chemistry combines historical excellence with advanced research in all fields of chemical sciences. We are committed to fostering innovation, collaboration, and the training of future generations of chemists.
In the past, our chemistry department was closely linked to medicine and pharmacy, with early labs at the San Matteo Hospital and the Botanical Garden. A major turning point came in 1935, when all our institutes were consolidated at our current location on Via Taramelli. This new home allowed for the expansion of specialized fields, including the establishment of our own chairs in Physical Chemistry in the 1940s and Organic Chemistry in the 1960s.Today, all these historical branches of chemistry have converged into our unified department, continuing a legacy of excellence that began over 250 years ago.
